The Sander DW 433 with All Kinds of Problems.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased DeWalt DW 433 in November 03. After it took a month to recieve. It broke after 3 hrs. of use. I took it to DeWalt Factory Service center, but the Facrory Service Center did not carry the parts ( 3 diffrent new parts are needed !). It has been a week since I droped my sander.I do not know what is wrong w/ my sander but I can tell you a problem I see. If you put a corse grid belt sandpaper (60,40,36 or reused belt sandpaper) it will rub against the body of DW 433 because it do not have a space between the front top roller and the sander body. I keep the most of belt papers for future use, But you can not do that with this DW 433. Because a belt will expand and it will rub against the body.( the space between body and top roller is less than 1/8" and you can not adjust it). It shoul be labeled B & D.

Dust Bag Worthless
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Used this sander one time for about half an eight foot board and after replacing the dust bag sixteen times in this short distance, I decided this machine was not for me. I can't believe Dewalt would make a belt sander where the dust bag is knocked/falls off the sander so easily. That little plastic slide to hold the dust bag and almost zero clearance between the dust bag and the surface is very poor engineering. I have no real clue how the rest of the machine operates as I have no use for a belt sander where the dust bag won't stay on. Well, I suppose I could duck tape it on... yeah right!!!

Not up to the DeWalt name
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I did not get five minutes of run time from mine. The belt tracking adjustment fell off and would not allow for the belt adjustment of running 1/4" from the edge of the platten. Very un-impressed with this product!

Disappointed
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this sander last fall at a woodworking show. Everytime I use it I end up finishing the job with my old beat-up Porter Cable. It's heavy and clumsy, has no belt speed, hard to use with a winter glove on, and the dust collection is non-existant.I have a woodworking business and can't afford wasting money on tools. Should've bought another Porter Cable.

Great Belt Sander
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this unit a while ago and didn't have the opportunity to use it right away. Then I checked out the reviews and became a little worried about my purchase.
First the dust bag. I am not sure why others have had problems with this system. I think that they must not be attaching the bag correctly. The bag attaches at 2 different points and is really rock solid. But you must attach it correctly or I can see that the bag would fall off. The dust collection was excellent. I sanded with 50 grit, 120 grit and had no issues whatsoever. What's nice about this dust collection system is that it's not in your face, so you can see what you are doing.
This is a heavy unit and the center of gravity is very low. I found it to be very stable and easy to handle. The variable speed worked as advertised and would maintain a constant speed as I applied pressure. I like the fact that the cord is mounted on top. It stays out of the way and did not have a tendency to get cought and cause me to gouge the wood. The belt is easily removed and replaced with the flip of a knob. I have no complaints.

curious of other posters
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I received this sander as a gift from my wife after she got tired of hearing me whine about wanting it, and after using it, I'm curious as to what the other posters are complaining about.
I used mine recently to sand down a new workbench I made and thought it worked great. I have used both porter cable and now dewalt and I think the dewalt works better. Let me just address some of the complaints. As for breaking, I don't know what happened to the other posters' but mine is still in great condition and is not broke. As for dust collection, the bag does connect in 2 different spots and also has a lip that MUST be covered or the bag WILL fall off. But once the lip is covered, I honestly had a difficult time taking it off. However, I will say that the dust collection leaves a little to be desired and does not really collect that much dust, but how many belt sanders really do. At least this bag is out of the way, and besides, if you want, you can turn the entire system off with a flip of the switch and remove the dust bag if you want to. I agree that the sander maintained constant speed under applied pressure, and I feel the belt remains pretty swtable and aligned during use, needing very little adjustment, which to my opinion is always a downfall of porter cable. I always seemed to have to adjust the PC belts. The sander is heavy, but thats what you want from a belt sander so that it stays in constant contact with the wood, providing a smooth finish. The sander does not wobble like others and produces very good results. Overall, I'm wondering what all the complaining is about. I like mine and would recommend it to others. I would have given it 5 stars if it actually collected some dust.

New doesn't mean improved
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I like Dewalt, and have several tools made by them. When I came into the market for a belt sander, this was on the top of my list. Not so much for the name, but the features seemed to make this a solid choice. Went to Lowes, bought one and when I got a chance to use it, was completely disappointed. It seems agressive enough, but the tracking stinks. The belt continues to roll off. I have the tracking knob almost completely loosened, and it still didn't help.
Brought it to be serviced. They fixed it, but after less than an hour of use, the same problem. I'll bring it back again, but between time and gas spent, it sure isn't worth the hassel. I like Dewalt, but I don't like this belt sander.

Did they forget to beta-test?
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I own in excess of 15 dewalt tools and this is the first one that I would not reccommend. Bought it at Lowe's. First thirty minutes of use was edge sanding 1 1/2" walnut--the back roller melted. Took it back got another. Next job, new sander--cross sanding glue ups and went through 4 belts in 20 minutes due to bizarre front roller construction. Checked out demo at Lowe's--they are all like that. Took it back got a Porter-Cable...Priceless.

Kevin - Appleton, Wisconsin
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this belt sander kit at Woodworker's Depot in Green Bay, WI. I used it for less than 20 minutes and it literally burned up. I was sanding hemlock beams, and yes, I was running it continuously for the 20 min, but I thought DeWalt products were meant for heavy duty work. I was very disappointed in this sander; especially when trying to return it to where I purchased it, because they tried to tell me that DeWalt had only a 30 money back guarntee, when it is actually 90 days (what a poor retailer since they're the largest power tool retailer in northeast Wisconsin).

I bought the Milwaukee belt sander (4X24) from Grainger. Let me tell you, you'll pay the price for Milwaukee, but this new belt sander burns me out!!!!! My advice, if Milwaukee makes it, buy Milwaukee, then Porter Cable, then (maybe) DeWalt.

Piece of Garbage
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I'm a contractor/carpenter in Athens, GA and a complete tool snob. I pride myself on having the best tools on the market, and I thought that this belt sander would be no exeption. Boy was I wrong. What a waste of time. I bought this to use sanding heart pine at a cabin in the mountains. Imagine my frustration at having to take this thing totally apart and not being able to get it to track properly after using for only a couple hours, not to mention that after changing the belt twice, the belt tension knob stopped working. If you buy this sander, be prepared for all the fun you'll have changing belts while the engine is hot.

And that was DeWalt sander #1. Now I'm on #3. (Fortunately I know the guys in Tool World at my local Lowe's.) Yesterday the tracking device fouled up so bad that it ate the belt and shredded the rubber on the rear wheel, making the tool completely unusable. So hey, take it from me, if you wanna buy this sander because it looks pretty, or because it has more bells and whistles than the Porter Cable and others, be my guest, but you'd be wise to buy two at once so when your first one screws up, you won't waste an entire workday hunting up a receipt, driving to the store, and exchanging it, which, given the chances, is exactly what you'll do.

My second Dewalt Sander
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I've had the older model for quite a few years, and have, in fact worn out the drive mechanism. I've been very happy with that model. This one is is different in that it does not have variable speed, and it is much HEAVIER. I have only used it a few times, and it seems to work reasonably well. The jury is still out though. I'm not sure I like the sound that the motor makes when running. It doesn't seem to get up to full speed. (I might well be so accustomed to the old one that this one just sounds different.) It does have plenty of power and removes even seasoned oak quickly. It seems to be much more "heavy duty" than the old model, although I assure you I got my money's worth out of it. The dust collector is also different. Rather than a bag, it has a small hard mesh box as a duct collector/filter. You can see much dust escaping as the sander runs. The locking mechanism for the dust collector does not seem to lock positively. I would have liked a bag better. I bought the whole kit, but the vacuum atachment is not included. You would think it would be, as I am sure it only costs a buck or two to produce (it is not easily obtained as no one has one in stock).

Excellent Sander, easy to use
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this sander to help with creating table/bench tops etc. I make these out of everything from pine, oak, endwood walnut, lacewood etc.

I found this Sander works very well. It has a nice heavy weight which I find makes it very easy to control. Also the variable speed allowes me greater control over the amount of stock the sander is eating. Plus i lets me dial it donw for softer wood and up for harder wood.

After a little practice I found I can use this to finish sand!

Had no problems with the dust bag, in fact I found it to be substantially more secure then the proter cable and craftsmen. It clips up from the bottom and then has a tight cowl the snaps over the top.

Belt tracking. Have not had a bit of trouble, but I have found there are two reasons folks tend to have difficulty with tracking 1) cheap belts; 2) Speed. I have never had a problem with my 3m belts. I have never bought a belt from Lowes/menards that was worth using on aything but a snail speed sander. The cheap belts can not handle the friction. The backing wears unevenly and they basicaly warp, thus making it impossible to track them. Folks who have trouble with bel tracking need to tunr the speed down and buy better belts. Also there is usuall no need to run at high speeds. The lower the speed the longer your belts last. Most belt sanders at their highest setting are running at the 3 setting on this sander (it goes to 6). Thus they are a bit more friendly to belts.

Buy good belts, and slow it down. The higher RPMS should be reserved for very hardwood and when you ned to chew up a lot of stock.

Should have read the reviews
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Before buying this DeWalt sander, I failed to read the reviews. Now that it is on its return trip, I read them and concur with most. That I bought the DeWalt sander because I have other DeWalt tools that are great. Not my experience with this sander.
My problem was it plugging up with sanding dust and required the careful extraction of sand dust to get the collector to work. I didn't have a problem with over-heating, but felt the tracking device didn't function (however did not have a problem keeping the belt tracking from a visual check). When the air blower passages were clean, the sander functioned well. But after a few minutes of sanding, I'd have to take it apart enough to remove the blockage ahead of the blower fan (good to have a high powered vacuum). Not a good design, IMO. I was disappointed.

Why did I buy this belt sander
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I think I am on the third repair of this sander. Seems the switch has gone bad. The cord was caught in the rear of the sander between the housing and the drum and caused the shaft to strip. I can't remember the third problem.

These are not all that good, that is why you can get a re-built one for $99.

Nice sander, needs some improvement
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I used this sander on a deck and I ran it hard for about 45 min at a time and it never overheated. After about a week of heavy use and abuse it would not turn on. I got it repaired under warranty(the switch went bad) Overall I really like the tool, it works better than a Porter-cable I used. I wish it had a fan or something to clear the dust out better. It will get clogged if you close the dust ejection port.

Junk. Pure Junk.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I know you're actually supposed to use a product before you review it, but in this case, that is impossible.

Sure, I plugged it in and pulled the trigger a few times to make sure it worked and was impressed by the the sheer amount of power in my heavy hands (heavy because this thing weighs a ton!). That's about where my amazement ends.

Where to start? I put a belt on and go to sand the edges of some P-Lam, and end up ruining the door when the tracking knob FALLS OFF and sends the belt shooting off the rollers and actually bends the platen! That's right, a 3x21, 150g sanding belt BENT the platen on this behemoth! I finally got the belt to stay on the machine, albeit an inch of the belt was hanging outside of the edge of the machine, thus making it a 2x21 belt sander, and the adjustment knob was on the verge of rattling out, yet again.

Always sand towards the right with this one, as moving to the left will cause the rollers to lose traction on the belt, causing the grit of the belt to have a better grip on what ever you're sanding, and you'll end up pulling the machine off of the belt.

To compound all of this, 2 weeks after I bought this I was deployed to Iraq, and wasn't able to return it to the factory for repair/refund. It does fulfill a key role on my job sites though. Since I bought this, none of my drawings have ever been blown away by the wind. Most expensive paperweight ever.

Buy a Porter-Cable.

Sander is "nice." Stand is "okay."
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I'm a big fan of DeWALT tools, in general. This sander is compact, powerful, ergonomic, and designed well, in general. In a new model, I would definitely change the square, rubber dust port. Attachments are a tad cumbersome to install/remove, and the rubber allows for a little too much movement at the joint. The sliding, plastic lock (same joint) also belongs on a brand of lesser quality. Other than that, I've had no problems with the sander. I have not used it without some means of dust extraction (bag/canister or vacuum). Doing otherwise for extended periods seems to be asking for trouble (for those who have read other reviews).

The stand/frame, on the other hand, isn't up to par. It is better than nothing! But these are some issues: It comes disassembled in the case with a bag of loose hardware (screws, nuts, etc.), and must be built and taken apart each time it is used/stored. Further, it includes a small attachment to support right-angle (or up to 45 degree) sanding to the belt. Mine has sloppy movement with no secure way to fix a given angle (even 90 degrees). I'm debating whether I should throw it away or try to re-engineer it to make it useful. Meanwhile, the face of the main frame (looks tan in picture) is covered with a thin veneer. This is fine, except that the same veneer is expected to keep several nuts (behind it) from spinning during assembly. These, of course, easily bend the veneer away from the surface. Last, the stand has a two, painted sheet metal parts that are stored beneath the sander in the box. If a belt is kept on the sander (of course), a piece of cardboard (or something) must be placed between the sander and frame parts to keep from scuffing them. The frame does have one nice feature: the distance (normal to the belt) between the sander and frame can be easily adjusted to that the belt sets behind, flush, or even proud of the face of the frame.

More than Expected
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am a rehabber. This saw was a great purchase. The sander has more than enough balls. It can take down stock as fast as you can feed it. Don't buy cheap belts and you will be more than pleased. The stand is great for sharpening and for small parts. The dust bag is a square hole. I have no clue if there is an adapter. The dust bag by itself is normal on the collection of dust.

Hold your breath.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I use belt sanders on a daily basis, almost exclusively indoors. The dust collection on this unit was pathetic. I returned this unit for a refund because of it. If dust is a concern for you, go with a Makita, they're like little vacuums, I've owned three and they've all been great.

A POORLY DESIGNED AND MARKETED TOOL!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
DEWALT DW433 Heavy Duty 8 Amp 3-Inch by 21-Inch Variable Speed Belt Sander with Dust Canister

A heavy duty belt sander without a good dust collection setup is worthless and this sander has one of the worst I've ever seen. In addition to poor design, DeWalt doesn't include a hose adapter with the sander - you have to purchase that seperately. This is ridiculous considering the cost of this tool. Alienating customers over a piece of plastic, that probably costs DeWalt 20 cents to make, seems like a monumental marketing error. I have several Dewalt power tools but will most likely not be buying any more.

Like the Tool!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought a Dewalt DW433KT. I have been using Dewalt tools for about 9 years and I like them. They are dependale and consistent. I bought the belt sander to use on a custom bar that I was building. The bar top is 10 feet long and 20 inches deep. The top was two pieces that were planed and joined. The belt sander and inversion stand were used to finish sand the top before finishing. It worked as claimed and I had no issues. The dust bag needed to be emptied several times but that was expected since it was a large piece. The bar top was the reason for the purchase and it performed well. I will use it on all my large pieces. I would recommend top of the line belts for any belt sander and I use 3M "Regalite" belts.
